While Discord is popularly used on desktop and laptop computers, it is also widely used on mobile devices. By installing Discord on your iOS or Android device, you can stay in touch with your Discord communities no matter where you are. In this article, we will explain how to install Discord on your iOS or Android device as well as outline how you can set up two-factor authentication to protect your Discord account.

Topics Include:

Installing Discord on Mobile

  1. Before beginning these steps, set up a Discord account if you do not already have one.
  2. Visit the Google Play Store or App Store on iOS and search for Discord.
  3. On the page for the Discord app, press Download or Get to install the app.
  4. Once the app is finished installing, open it and log in using your Discord account information.

Congratulations, you have successfully installed Discord on your mobile device!

Enabling Two-Factor Authentication for Discord

For an added layer of security, enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) is an easy way to keep unauthorized users from accessing your Discord account and associated communities. In order to use this feature, you will need to have an authentication app such as Google Authenticator or Authy. For the purposes of this guide we will use Google Authenticator.

  1. To enable two-factor authentication, tap your Discord profile picture to open the User Settings menu.
  2. In the User Setting menu, select My Account to open the account management menu.
  3. Under the My Account menu, select the Enable Two-Factor Auth button.
  4. The next page will provide you with instructions on how to set up the authentication using the code displayed under the section labeled 2FA Key (Manual Entry)
  5. If you are using the Google Authenticator app, it will prompt you to input a code or scan a barcode. Select the option to input a code and input the 2FA Key provided by the Discord instructions.
  6. After entering the 2FA Key, the Google Authenticator app should give you a 6-digit authentication code that you will then enter in the bottom section of the Discord 2FA menu. Once you’ve entered the code, press Activate to enable 2FA using Google Authenticator.

Adding SMS Authentication

In addition to 2FA via Google Authenticator, you can add your mobile number to use it as another authentication method via SMS messaging services.

  1. After enabling the 2FA functionality in Discord via the above steps, you should receive a prompt to Enable SMS Authentication. Select Add Phone Number to begin this process.
  2. On the next screen you will be prompted to enter your phone number. Once you press send, a text message will be sent to your phone with a 6-digit code
  3. On the next screen, enter the 6-digit code you received via text to enable SMS authentication.

Congratulations, you have successfully set up 2FA and SMS Authentication for your Discord account!

Now that you know how to install Discord on your mobile device and use it to secure your account via 2FA, you can securely access your favorite Discord communities no matter where you are.

While Discord itself is completely free-to-use, it is possible to sign up for a subscription service called Discord Nitro that unlocks a number of advanced features and perks that can enhance your Discord experience. In this article we will discuss the features of Discord Nitro and outline how you can get started with this service using your existing Discord account.

Topics Include:

What is Discord Nitro?

As mentioned previously, Discord Nitro is an add-on subscription for Discord that adds a number of new features to your account. Increased file upload size, better screen-sharing image quality, and animated emojis are just a few examples of how Discord Nitro can enhance your Discord experience. While the free version of Discord has a number of useful features, you may find some of the limitations too restrictive, particularly if you run your own Discord server. At present there are two plans available, Discord Nitro Classic and Discord Nitro.

Discord Nitro Classic vs Discord Nitro

While Discord Nitro contains all of the latest features and newest perks offered by the Nitro service, Discord Nitro Classic is still offered at a reduced price, minus the newer features and perks such as server boosting. A Discord Nitro subscription costs $9.99/month or $99.99/year, while a Discord Nitro Classic subscription costs $4.99/month or $49.99/year.

Discord Nitro Features

Once you sign up for Discord Nitro, your account will have access to the following features:

Better Emojis – Enhanced support for custom emojis as well as animated emojis. Animated emojis are a unique way to communicate with any server you join, and are only available to Discord Nitro subscribers

Increased File Upload Size – By default, Discord only supports file uploads smaller than 10MB. With Discord Nitro, this size increases to 100MB, allowing you to send much larger files over Discord such as PDFs. With Discord Nitro Classic, the file upload size is only increased to 50MB.

HD Video – While the free version of Discord supports screen-share streaming and video calls, the video quality is relatively low. Discord Nitro Classic supports high-resolution video, giving you clearer video calls and streaming sessions. Discord Nitro enhances this with source-based video quality, meaning the video quality is the same as the quality of the streaming source

Server Boosts – Signing up for Discord Nitro gives you two free server boosts. These server boosts can be used to unlock unique benefits for the server of your choice. When a server gets enough boosts, new features can be unlocked such as additional slots for custom emojis or enhanced video quality for all users on the server.

How to Set Up Discord Nitro

  1. To add Discord Nitro to your account, first ensure that you are logged into your Discord account
  2. Once logged into your Discord account, access the User Settings menu by clicking on the gear icon to the bottom left of your Discord homepage, to the right of your Discord avatar and username.
  3. Once in the User Settings menu, click the Discord Nitro tab.
  4. On the Discord Nitro page, click the Subscribe button.
  5. This will then open a new page prompting you to sign up for either Discord Nitro Classic or Discord Nitro.
  6. After selecting which plan you want, you will be prompted to input your payment information.
  7. After entering your payment information, the process will finish and the subscription will be active.

Congratulations, you have successfully signed up for Discord Nitro or Discord Nitro Classic!

Discord streaming and screen-sharing are easy ways to share your virtual experiences over the popular online communication platform Discord. These features make it easy to collaborate with other Discord users or simply share what you’re seeing. In this article we will discuss Discord streaming and screen-sharing and outline how to use these versatile features.

Topics Include:

Sharing Your Screen vs Streaming

Discord Streaming

While Discord allows you to share your screen directly, including all windows and programs currently displayed, you can also stream an application such as a video game. Similar to screen-sharing, Discord streaming directly streams the application you’re running, rather than the entire screen itself. This is useful if you want to stream an application without showing your audience your entire desktop or other open windows. Most commonly, this is used by gamers looking to share their gameplay with other users in their Discord server in much the same way a streamer on Twitch shares their gameplay with their audience.

Discord Screen-Sharing

Screen sharing, while similar to streaming in many ways, is useful under different contexts. Discord screen-sharing can be used during classroom settings to collaborate on projects, or it can be used in a professional context to share slideshows or other visual aids during a presentation. Since the screen-sharing feature perfectly mirrors your desktop, you can share virtually anything you would normally do on your computer, making it extremely useful for troubleshooting purposes.

Streaming and Sharing In Discord

How to Share Your Screen in Discord

  1. When logged into your Discord server and within one of the voice channels, you will see a number of options on the bottom left corner of the Discord interface. Below the “Voice Connected” section you should see two options: Video and Screen. Click Screen.

  2. After clicking Screen, you will be presented with the opportunity to select if you want to share your entire screen or just an application. Select whichever you would like to display.
  3. On the next screen, you will have the ability to change what you’re streaming as well as the stream quality. By default, the only options are a resolution of 720 and a frame rate of 30. To access higher resolutions and frame rates, you need a subscription to the paid Discord Nitro service.
  4. Once done, click Go Live to start sharing your screen.

How to Stream on Discord

  1. After logging into your Discord server and joining a channel, open up the application you wish to stream.
  2. Once the application is running, Discord should automatically detect the software. Below the channel list on your Discord server, you should see the name of the software displayed.
  3. To the right of the application name, you should see a symbol that looks like a monitor with an arrow on top. Click this icon to start streaming the application.
  4. After clicking the icon you will be prompted to select the stream quality. By default, the resolution is 720 and the frame rate is 30. Just as with screen-sharing, higher resolutions and frame rates require an active Discord Nitro subscription. To continue with your stream, click Go Live.

Congratulations, you now know how to stream and share your screen in Discord!

Creating a Text Channel

  1. While logged into your Discord server, navigate to the left-hand side of the server homepage and search for the heading “Text Channels”.

  2. To the right of “Text Channels” is a plus sign. Click on this plus sign to start the channel creation process.
  3. After clicking the plus sign, a popup will appear and ask you to select which type of channel you’d like to create. Select “Text Channel”.
  4. Next, you will need to create a channel name. This should be something descriptive that lets users know what the purpose of the channel is.
  5. Once you have entered the channel name, you can choose whether or not to set the channel to private. Private channels can only be accessed by users with permission to do so based on their user roles
  6. Once you have decided whether or not to make the channel private, click the “Create Channel” button to complete the process.

Creating a Voice Channel

  1. While logged into your Discord server, navigate to the left-hand side of the server homepage and search for the heading “Voice Channels”.
  2. To the right of “Voice Channels” is a plus sign. Click on this plus sign to start the channel creation process.
  3. After clicking the plus sign, a popup will appear and ask you to select which type of channel you’d like to create. Select “Voice Channel”.
  4. Next, you will need to create a channel name. This should be something descriptive that lets users know what the purpose of the channel is.

  6. Once you have decided whether or not to make the channel private, click the “Create Channel” button to complete the process.

Editing a Channel

Once you’ve created a channel you can perform additional customizations such as adding a channel topic and setting permissions.

  1. To edit a channel you’ve created, click on the gear symbol to the right of the channel name. This should take you to a new menu.
  2. In the menu, you should see a list of options on the left. By default, you will be looking at the overview tab. The overview tab will have different options available depending on if you are editing a text channel or a voice channel. We will review some of these options below:

    Text Channel:

Channel Name – Allows you to edit the channel name.
Channel Topic – Allows you to create a description of the channel.
Slowmode – Allows you to set an interval at which users are allowed to send messages in the channel.
NSFW Channel – Requires users to first confirm that they are of legal age. This type of channel has no explicit content filter in place.

    Voice Channel:

Channel Name – Allows you to edit the channel name
Bitrate – This is the bitrate of the voice channel, which dictates audio quality. Turning this value up can adversely affect users with limited internet connectivity, so it is recommended to keep it at the default value of 64kbps.
Video Quality – This setting determines the quality of any video calls performed by a user in the channel.
User Limit – This setting allows you to limit the number of users that can join a given channel. This limit can be overridden by users with permission to move other users.
Region Override – This setting will force users to connect to a given Discord server region, regardless of their own geographic location or network status. Leaving this on automatic will allow Discord to automatically determine the optimal setting.
  3. Once you’ve made all of the necessary changes, click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the menu. The changes will take effect immediately.

Congratulations, you now know how to create and customize Discord channels!

As you can see in the above image, there are a number of things you can do in your Discord Friends List. We will review the various options and discuss how to use them below:

  1. This is the Discord logo. By clicking on it, users can access the Friends List at any time no matter what server they’re in.
  2. By clicking on the plus sign next to Direct Messages, users can start a direct message conversation with anyone on their friends list. The left-hand column of the Discord Friends List will display any active Direct Message conversations.
  3. To sort the Friends List, the top row can be used to sort all added friends into various categories depending on their status. Here is an explanation of the various options:

Online – Clicking this option will make the Friends List only display online users. If a user is offline, they will not appear in this view.

All – Clicking this option will make the Friends List display all users on the list, regardless of online or offline status. This is an easy way to see all of your currently added friends.

Pending – Clicking this option will display any pending friend requests from other users. This allows you to accept or deny friend requests.

Blocked – Clicking this option will display all users you currently have blocked. This list can also be used to unblock users if necessary. If a user is blocked, they will not be able to send you direct messages or friend requests.
  4. By default, the Friends List will display a window that allows you to input a username to send a friend request to. Once you have entered this username, you can click Send Friend Request to send the request. Please note that in order to do this, you will need the four digit code following the username. A Discord username will look like the following:

    examplename#1234
  5. If the Friend Request window doesn’t display by default, you can click the Add Friends button to access the window manually.
  6. The right hand column of the Friends List will display active users. This section is an easy way to get a quick sense of who is online and what they are currently doing on Discord.
  7. If you want to start a direct message conversation with a group of friends, click on the speech bubble on the top right to start a group conversation.

Congratulations, you now know how to navigate the Discord Friends List!

When managing your Discord server, you may find yourself looking for extra tools or features to enhance your experience. Fortunately, Discord offers full support for programs known as bots. These programs offer a wide variety of functions and can be installed in a few simple steps, making them a vital and powerful tool for any Discord server administrator. In this article, we will take a closer look at Discord bots and review the installation process.

Use your Dedicated Hosting server to develop and host your own Discord Bots today!

What are Discord Bots?

Discord Bots are automated programs that serve a specific function within the context of a Discord server. Once a user has created a Discord server, they can add bots to enhance the experience of all users on the server. Bots can serve a variety of functions such as playing music, sharing videos, and much more. Those skilled with the Python language can even design custom Discord Bots that can be hand-tailored to any variety of unique purposes. In short, Discord Bots add a whole host of features to Discord servers and can be installed with relative ease.

Installing a Discord Bot

Once you have figured out which bot you want to install, you can start the installation process. While the process may differ slightly for different bots, most of them can be installed in a similar fashion. Please refer to the documentation associated with your chosen bot for specific installation instructions.

  1. Go to the website for the bot you wish to install.
  2. Next, look for an option such as Add to Discord.
  3. You should then see an option such as Add to Server or Select Server. To proceed, select your server.
  4. Once that is done, click Continue or Proceed.
  5. Next you will likely need to authorize the bot for administrator access by checking the associated checkbox and clicking Authorize or Allow
  6. Once that is done, go to your Discord server.
  7. In your Discord chat, you should see “Thanks for adding me to your server!” or a similar message if the bot was added successfully.

Discord Troubleshooting https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/edu/discord/discord-troubleshooting/ https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/edu/discord/discord-troubleshooting/#respond Thu, 19 Nov 2020 21:41:36 +0000 https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/?p=63665 Read More >]]> Discord Troubleshooting

When using Discord, you may encounter issues with connectivity or sound quality. This can be disruptive to normal communication and may impact the overall Discord experience. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to troubleshoot and resolve some of the issues that may arise while using Discord. In this article, we will discuss common Discord troubleshooting methods.

Use these troubleshooting tips to ensure a smooth Discord experience on your Dedicated Hosting server.

Mic Not Working?

  1. First, click User Settings on the bottom left corner of your Discord home page.
  2. On the next page, go to Voice and Video Settings
  3. On the next page, under Voice Settings, confirm that your microphone and headset or speakers are selected on the drop down menu.

Normally, the correct devices are already selected by default. If not, you will need to select the drop-down menu and find your device on the list. If your device does not appear in the list, there may be an issue preventing Discord from recognizing the connected device.
  4. To test your microphone, click Let’s Check under the Mic Test section and start speaking into your microphone.

If the microphone is working properly, Discord will play back your voice. If you do not hear any playback, that means Discord is not picking up your voice. You may want to check to see if the microphone has a mute function built into the hardware itself.

Server Region

When operating a Discord server, one common issue is the fact that some users may be located in a geographic region that is a significant distance from the Discord server region. This distance can lead to increased latency, or response times, between a user’s computer and the Discord server itself. Fortunately, Discord server administrators can change the server region to a closer geographic location to the users experiencing the issue. For best results, the server region should be centrally located relative to the majority of users on your Discord server.

Changing Server Region

  1. To access the server settings, click on the server name at the top left of your Discord homepage.
  2. From the drop-down menu, select Server Settings
  3. On the Server Overview page, under the Server Name, there is a section labeled Server Region. Click Change.

  4. On the next screen, click on the region you wish to use and save your changes.

The Discord server should then connect to the new region. Your connection to the server may be interrupted for a brief moment while the connection is established. Ideally, this will resolve any latency issues that arise from geographic location.

Hopefully this guide will help with Discord troubleshooting efforts and ensure that your Discord experience remains uninterrupted.

In addition to voice and text-based communication, Discord allows for video calls that can be used for video conferencing between two or more users. These video calls function in a similar way to other video conferencing platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet, or Skype. Since Discord is free and can run on most operating systems used today, this makes it a versatile and easy-to-use video conferencing solution for users of any level. In this guide, we will explore how to use the Discord Video Call feature and modify important settings.

Topics Include:

Use the Discord Video Call feature to connect with developers and enhance your Dedicated Hosting experience!

  1. On the Discord Home Page, click on the gear icon on the bottom left to access User Settings
  2. Review the settings list and select Voice & Video.
  3. At the bottom of the next page you will see the Video Settings menu.
  4. Click on the drop-down menu to ensure that your webcam is recognized by the Discord software. If you want to test the camera, click the Preview button on the right-hand size to get a preview of your video stream.

Starting a Video Call

Now that you have verified that your camera is working properly, you can get started with your Discord Video Call.

  1. To start a video call, click on the user you wish to call from your Discord Friends List.
  2. At the top of the window you will see a camera icon. Press this button to start a video call with the selected friend.

Sharing Your Screen

You may find yourself needing to share your screen in a Discord Video Call. Fortunately, this feature was recently added to the Discord Video Call interface.

  1. To share your screen while in a video call, click on the Share Your Screen button to the right of the Turn On Camera button.

  4. To change the screen being shared, click on the downward arrow on the Share your Screen button and select the Change Window option. You can also click on this arrow to change the quality of the stream or end the sharing session without ending the call.

View Modes

When in a Discord Video Call with more than two people, you may find yourself looking for a view that shows all users in the call or a view that only focuses on one person. Fortunately, Discord allows you to change the view mode of the video call.

Grid View – This option will allow you to see the video output of all users in the call at the same time. Ideal for round-table discussions and team meetings.

Focus View – This option allows one user to be set as the focus of the video call, while showing all other users in smaller windows. This view is ideal for classroom settings or presentations.

Now that you know how to use Discord Video Calls, you can use Discord as a free and easy-to-use alternative to expensive or overly complex video conferencing solutions.

Installing Discord on Linux

The process to install Discord on Linux is a bit more complicated than it is for mobile devices, Windows, or Apple computers. The more common Windows or Apple (Mac) operating systems often use a graphical interface for software installation. Linux-based computers oftentimes require the use of the command-line interface to fully install new software applications.

We will explore how to install Discord on Ubuntu, Fedora, and CentOS. Please note that the steps in this article will require the use of the command-line interface.

Installing Discord on Ubuntu

The process of installing Discord on Ubuntu is relatively straightforward in comparison to other operating systems. The Discord for Linux package is available in both tar.gz and .deb formats and can be downloaded directly from the Discord website.

The Discord application is packaged in the Canary Fedora repository. You can easily download and install it using the DNF package manager.

Configuring Discord

If you have never used Discord and you don’t have an account, then the first thing you will need to do is register with Discord.com. If you have an existing account, then you simply have to log in and your previous user profile will load up. We do recommend that you still go through the configuration steps listed below in order to make sure that your audio and any keyboard/mouse shortcuts are set up the way you want them.

  1. To ensure that your microphone and speakers are connected to the program, click on the small gear on the bottom left side of the Discord homepage to access User Settings
  2. On the next page, click on Voice & Video on the left-hand side of the page.
  3. On this page, use the drop-down menus at the top to select which devices will be used with Discord. The input device will be your webcam or headset microphone, while the output device will be your speakers or headphones.
  4. In addition to changing the devices, you can also adjust the input volume to adjust how loudly your voice is transmitted over Discord as well as the output volume to adjust how loudly other users’ voices will be played back via your speakers or headphones.
  5. Next, you will want to choose your microphone input mode:

Push-to-Talk: Allows you to designate a button on your mouse or keyboard to act as a Push-to-Talk key, meaning that you will have to press that button to transmit your voice over Discord.

Voice Activation: Allows you to simply start speaking in order to start transmitting your voice. The volume at which the microphone activates is determined by the “Input Sensitivity” slider below the input modes.

Now that you have all of your input and output devices configured, you are all set to start using Discord!
